T O P I C R E V I E WT..putting all the confederate statues in a museum? Just like we did with the dinosaurs and also other uglier parts of history (which, btw, we'll never "sanitize" or wipe out or forget no matter how hard anyone might try). Do we really need to leave them up and basically give a middle finger to certain groups of people who have to walk by them everyday? I'm not saying destroy them, just move them to their own special space and maybe replace them with new statues of better "idols". History will never go away, no matter how hard you try to wipe it out. It will never disappear (for those who want to try to make that weak argument). And I don't think anyone wants to do that. There's always learning opportunity in our ugly past mistakes. Let's learn from the past and put some more beautiful pieces of art up at our communal places. Celebrate public figures that have made their life about bringing people together and not tearing them apart. Isn't there some bible quote about being careful who you idolize.....? ~~~~~~~ETA - I don't know the Bible that well, maybe it was Buddha who mentioned that. ....moth and rust and stuff..... What is most important in the long run? Surely not douchebag statues. teaselI heard they went up in the Jim Crow era, so they aren't that old, and he was a known racist. So, yes: put them in privately-funded museums. People cheered when Saddam Hussein's statue was toppled, and these guys aren't heroes - they fought to keep slavery alive. Randall"911...what's your emergency?""I saw a statue!"RandallActually, the U.S. government granted all civil war soldiers veteran status. So, the verbiage of "hero" is not so black and white (pun intended).Should statues of all the founding fathers be taken down, since almost all of them owned slaves? Or should they be removed, because women couldn't vote during the time that they lived? MLK, Jr. was against gay marriage, so let's take down all statues of him also. And the Democrats were traditionally the party of racism, so let's take down any statue of a Democrat. Many slaves were owned by African Americans, so all African American statues should be removed, as well. This is a slippery slope, and if you can't see it as such, you might be a liberal. teasel quote:Originally posted by Randall:This is a slippery slope, and if you can't see it as such, you might be a liberal. And if you make such sweeping statements, you might be a trump supporter. RandallWhat's sweeping about it? There is already a call to remove statues of Washington and Jefferson. Lincoln's statue was defaced, and he set the slaves free! People even want to blast Mount Rushmore and Stone Mountain. So, if reality is sweeping, then you might want to grab a broom yourself. CatalinaSlippery Slope lol. Gotta love the purple prose... what's to become of us!!!CatalinaLincoln became abolitionist in time to add it to reasons for thr civil war. Most people were racist in their own way back then. Even Harriet Stowe who wrote the book that inspired many abolitionists, depicted the poor darkies as slightly grown children.. tho sympathetic she was only a gfe steps ahead of Lee and many southerners who knew the slave days were numbered but sincerely thought blacks needed thr cultivating hand of we civilized white folk. We know better now and some knew better then but Randall is right, if we judge historical figures by modern mores we miss the point.. and if we can only respect the perfect ..well...But these statues can be used as a way of educating about not just glorifying the long gone glory days.. in a way that's an insult to the present, isn't it? Put Harriet Tubman next to Lee?
